The ride itself was actually based on the 1950 movie Treasure Island, which in turn was based on the book by Robert Louis 

Stevenson wrote way back in 1883.

The franchise originated with the theme park ride of the same name, which opened at Disneyland in 1967 and was one of the  last Disneyland rides overseen by Walt Disney. Disney based the ride on pirate legends, folklore and novels, such as those by 

Italian writer Emilio Salgari.
